The mini mal surfboards get their name from the fact that they are in the same shape and structure as the longer 'Malibu' type boards. The minimal surfboard is used by intermediates as well as some beginners to learn to surf. Minimal surfboards are great to learn on because they have width and length for stability allowing novices to practice standing up. The surfboard tail is also kept tight on minimal like a traditional shortboard making the board easier to turn for a beginner and thus allowing them to progress quicker onto the face of the wave.
